Facultad de Psicología, 1998-10) Bríñez-Horta, José ArturoA relationship between cognitive schema and behavioral reaction was studied in consumers and non-consumers of psvchoactive substances. To reach this objective, reclassified items of Millón Clinical Multiaxial Inventory - II (MCMI-I1) were applied to a sample 40 polyaddicts and 44 non-consumers. Participants were at least 18 years old, men and women, and residents in Santa Fe de Bogotá. The results revealed signifi¬cant relationships between misuse and behavioral reactions. Both dysfunctions were also significant more frequently in consumers than in non-consumers (p < 0.001) Results also revealed that there is less probability of error when misuse is predicted from cognitive schema and from behavioral reactions than the opposite way.

Facultad de Psicología, 2001-07) Bríñez-Horta, José ArturoA new instrument for assessing AIcohol-related Problems according to ICD-IO and DSMIV is introduced. This Questionnaire contains 46 items about alcoholic intoxication, abuse and dependence. It was used a criterion-referenced tests model and Guttman’s unidimentional accumulative scales. The sample had 309 participants, college students, anonymous alcoholics and uninstitutionalized alcoholics. Scales reliability coefficients vary between .62 and .87; scales validity indexes, between .5 and .85; sensitivity coefficient equals .86 and specificity coefficient, .68. The questionnaire has a positive predictive power of .87; a negative predictive power of .65, and an overall diagnostic power of .81. The principal features of this questionnaire are its efficiency for evaluating the development of different signs of alcohol-related problems, and its utility in research and clinical evaluation

Facultad de Psicología, 2000-11) Bríñez-Horta, José ArturoThe purpose of this research project was to examine some perceptual disabilities associ¬ated with Fetal Alcohol Effects. Twenty-six children, 7 to 15 years old, 13 sons and 13 daughters of mothers who drank alcohol during their pregnancy, were evaluated on re¬sponses from tactile and visual perception and compared with other twenty-six children of mothers who did not drink during. A 2 * 2 * 2 cases and controls design was used to evaluate the responses of the children in terms of odds ratios or univariate logistic regres¬sions. Analyses revealed deleterious effects of prenatal alcohol consumption on tactile discrimination, haptic recognition, drawings characteristics relations’ recognition, block design and depth perception. Fetal alcohol exposure is associated with perceptual disabili¬ties and, therefore, with developmental and academic difficulties through school years. Psychologists and educators should understand the long-term effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on behavioral and cognitive processes.

Facultad de Psicología, 2003-05) Bríñez-Horta, José ArturoThe objective of this research was to study the association between Marital Satisfaction, Idealistic Distortion and psychoactive substances consumption during pregnancy. Seventy five women were evaluated. The kind of substances, their level of consumption and the level of marital satisfaction, and idealistic distortion showed statistical significance between general, scholar and street pregnant women. Results suggest the possibility of a wrong understanding about the problems of these groups, which could explain the little efficiency of psychotherapeutic strategies directed to these populations.
